The Relationship between Children’s Effortful Control and Externalizing Problem Behavior: The Mediating Effect of Self-Regulation Ability

|
The study aims to verify the mediating effect of self-regulation ability in the relationship between children’s effortful control and externalizing problem behavior. The study participants consisted of mothers of 223 children, aged 3 to 5 living in J-city, Jeollabuk-do who responded to a questionnaire, and the collected data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results were as follows. First, there was significant differences in effortful control, self-regulation ability, and externalizing problem behavior according to children’s gender. Second, effortful control showed a positive correlation with self-regulation ability but had a negative correlation with externalizing problem behavior. Third, self-regulation ability was found to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between effortful control and externalizing problem behavior. This result suggests that effortful control may directly affect externalizing problem behavior, but self-regulation ability can also indirectly affect externalizing problem behavior. This study proposes that parents and teachers who work at childcare institutions should find ways to reduce externalizing problem behavior by identifying temperamental factors that affect children’s control, so that they can grow and adapt positively to society as well as at home.
